From Wheat to Batch Proof: A Masterclass in the Woodford Reserve Portfolio
It was a high-energy night at Pinnacle Golf Club as the Central Ohio Whiskey Society gathered for an evening that perfectly bridged the gap between beloved “everyday drinkers” and the high-proof unicorns of the whiskey world. Leading the charge were the legendary “Whiskey” Pete Wagner, a veteran spirits expert and brand educator for Brown-Forman, and Jeff Fullam, Area Manager at Brown-Forman. Together, their expertise and enthusiastic presentation turned a standard tasting into a deep-dive exploration of the technical artistry and environmental science behind Woodford Reserve.
Before the main event, the society conducted the latest round of our 2026 Blind Pour of the Year: Bracket Mania. This year, our focus is on finding the best value among the forgotten gems under $40. In a result that drew cheers from the crowd, Benchmark Bonded took the top spot for the night, advancing in the bracket as we move toward the semifinals this fall.
The Woodford Philosophy: 90.4% Humidity
A significant portion of the evening was dedicated to how the distillery is evolving under its current leadership, shifting toward a more precise, sensory-driven approach to production. Pete explained that while the foundation remains rooted in the traditional five sources of flavor—grain, water, fermentation, distillation, and maturation—the new management is now embracing a “flavor-to-fragrance” philosophy that treats whiskey-making as a fine-tuned atmospheric science.
This modern evolution is marked by an obsession with environmental minutiae, specifically citing Master Distiller Emeritus Chris Morris’s insistence on maintaining warehouse humidity at exactly 90.4%. This specific micro-climate serves as the secret sauce that optimizes the spirit’s interaction with the oak. By combining heritage techniques with this high-tech focus on micro-climates and wood experimentation, the distillery is operating with a level of technical precision that differs from years past. The goal is to ensure that even the most robust, barrel-strength releases—like the ones we tasted—maintain the sophisticated elegance and refined character that have become the brand’s hallmark.
A Journey Through the Core & The Unicorns
The evening featured a comprehensive exploration of Woodford’s primary portfolio, with Pete providing “field guide” tips for those hunting local shelves during what he called “Unicorn Season.”
-
Woodford Reserve Bourbon Whiskey: The foundation of the portfolio. Pete discussed the triple-distillation process in pot stills and the balance of the standard 72% corn mash bill that provides the rich, rounded notes of dried fruit and vanilla we’ve all come to love.
-
Woodford Reserve Rye Whiskey: A standout for the evening, Pete detailed the technical nuances of their 53% rye, 33% corn mash bill. By leaning into a lower-rye recipe compared to MGP standards, Woodford produces a rye that offers a spicy “tingle” without the aggressive “punch in the mouth” found in other brands.
-
Woodford Reserve Malt Whiskey: Representing a rare American take on a classic style, this expression uses 51% malted barley. Pete highlighted how this creates a nutty, toasted profile with layers of caramel and milk chocolate, bridging the gap between traditional bourbon and Scotch.
-
Woodford Reserve Wheat Whiskey: This “four-grain” style whiskey (52% wheat) was a hit for those looking for a softer pour. Pete described its unique floral and fruit-forward aromatic profile, which leads into a palate of cooked apple and spice.
-
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked: A perennial favorite, Pete discussed the intensive process of finishing fully mature bourbon for an additional year in a second, heavily toasted and lightly charred barrel. He also teased the “unicorn” version currently on shelves: Double Double Oaked, which doubles down on that rich, dark chocolate and maple syrup intensity.
-
Woodford Reserve Barrel Strength Rye (Batch Proof): The heavyweight champion of the night. Pete revealed that the current Batch Proof Rye clocks in at a staggering 125.1 proof. Despite the high octane, the room was struck by its smoothness, characterized by deep warming fruit and a long, savory finish.
Ultimately, the success of the evening at Pinnacle was rooted in Pete’s ability to bridge the gap between technical distillation science and the simple joy of discovery. Whether he was explaining the impact of 90.4% warehouse humidity on a spirit’s character or guiding the society through the high-proof intensity of the Batch Proof Rye, his presentation provided a comprehensive showcase of the precision behind the Woodford label. We walked away from the tasting not only with a deeper understanding of the six distinct pillars of their portfolio but with a lasting appreciation for the vision and patience required to produce these Kentucky favorites.
